Fairfax, Marin County, California

Fifty foot spiral labyrinth in the "unicursal" style, where there are no dead ends. It was originally created by local Karen LaPuma, and maintained by nearby residents.  It was used for meditation, drumming circles, weddings and other spiritual events until recently when Marin County authorities destroyed it.  Controversty ensued, and finally the Town of Fairfax was determined to have decision making authority.  They decided in favor of allowing reconstruction.

The twists and turns of the labyrinth are thought to take one forward as does the unknown path of life.  The turns of the maze always balance each other out, which aids the person walking it to feel internal balance and harmony with the surrounding land.
