Catal Hoyuk

Actually located in the Hittite Museum in Ankara, these are recreations of a room in ancient Catal Hoyuk, (has several spellings, including Catalhuyuk), one of the very earliest of cities known to have existed.  It flourished between 6000 and 8000 BCE, and is still being excavated.

Numerous carefully made images of the Goddess have been found here, and fascinating reconstructions of daily life exist on the website devoted to the archaeological dig.  The culture was apparently matrilineal and matrifocal, while still keeping equality between the sexes.
